A vital step to save water, electricity and care for your clothes is….
How you use a washing machine will impact the lifespan of clothes, and also the amount of water and energy used. The basic steps are to first check the washing instructions on clothes tags, then sort your laundry and choose the correct washing mode:
Suitable Wash Mode
Suitable Laundry
How It Works
Quick wash mode, generally takes around 30-45 mins
Normal/ regular mode, generally takes around 2 hours
Hand wash with stain remover before machine wash
Washing lightly soiled items such as pyjamas
Washing towels, underwear, socks and heavily soiled items
Washing items stained with oil/grease or coloured sweat stains
Quick wash mode uses less water and energy than a standard cycle and spins slower. It would be a good alternative if there are no stains on clothes or just for basic cleaning.
Using this laundry routine well can save you a fair amount of electricity over time.
Waning at 30°C is effective and much better for the environment. More energy can be saved while some washing machine temperature settings go as low as 20°C.
Normal/ regular mode generally refers to fast agitating wash and fast spin cycle.
By choosing this wash cycle, you can remove stains and dirt from these sweaty clothes. The recommended temperature is 30°C as this will save 40% of annual electricity.
You might be washing at 60°C because you've heard it kills bacteria, but the temperature on its own doesn't.
Some bacterial spores and viruses are resistant to washing at 60°C. Add antibacterial laundry cleanser if necessary.
Oil and grease stains: remove any excess oil stains with a paper towel or dry cloth first. Gently rub the hot baking soda water into your clothes, until the stains are gone.
Don’t put these stained clothes directly into washing machines as the stains can enter the washing machine's drum during washing.
Sweat stains: apply baking soda water onto the clothes. Soak it until the mixture effectively removes the sweat stains.
