Light Up Your WFH Life with Efficient Light Bulbs

Who doesn’t yearn for a vacation abroad? But the reality is that we have to stay home more often. To quench your thirst, you can try turning your living room into a small staycation suite, or create the ambience of a hotel business centre for your home office. There is no dramatic transformation required: just make good use of a small light bulb to give your living space a facelift.

The function of a light bulb is more than illumination. It gives a living space an additional flavour, creating an ambience from romance, brilliance, cosiness to tenderness. To refresh your home, we suggest replacing existing bulbs with more cost-effective ones that come with pleasing lighting effects. LED bulbs* (light-emitting diode) are the ideal choice. They come in various colour temperature (Kelvin scale, a temperature unit indicated by the letter K) and the ability to adjust brightness. They can also be matched with different types of lamps, such as ceiling lamps, wall lamps and floor lamps, creating a tasteful style and comfortable feeling.

How to choose suitable LED light bulbs?

Currently, the most common household light bulbs include incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps and LED bulbs. Incandescent light bulbs are usually measured by power (i.e. watt). The higher the wattage, the higher the levels of power consumption and brightness. Compact fluorescent lamps and LED bulbs are able to generate the same brightness as incandescent light bulbs with lower wattage, which mean they are more energy-saving and durable.

For a clear understanding, it is best to refer to the unit for brightness, which is lumen (lm). For instance, the brightness of 5W compact fluorescent lamps in general is 250 lm, while the brightness of 3W LED bulbs is also 250 lm. Thus, it is necessary to double check, as higher wattage does not mean higher level of brightness for these two types of bulbs.

A Closer Look at Lumens

Generally speaking, the light efficiency of incandescent light bulbs ranges from 12 to 24 lumens/watts (lm/W), compact fluorescent lamps from 30 to 50 lumens/watts, and LED bulbs from 70 to 110 lumens/watts. For the conversion, please refer to the following examples (lumens vary with brands and models):

Light Bulbs

Lumens

Watts and its equivalent Lumens

Incandescent

12lm/W

40W = 480lm

LED

70lm/W

7W = 490lm

CFL

30lm/W

15W = 450lm

Friendly Reminder

For better illumination, use light-colored lampshades with higher light transmittance. Frequently dust your bulbs and lamps to improve light efficiency. If you are still using incandescent light bulbs, we recommend that the next time you change your bulbs or lamps, switch to more energy-efficient LED bulbs or CFLs.
