CLP and Hang Lung Properties jointly promote the decarbonisation of Hong Kong’s construction industry

Diesel generators are widely used in Hong Kong’s construction sites, giving rise to environmental and health risks. To cut carbon emissions in the construction sector, CLP is advocating the electrification of construction sites by replacing diesel generators with the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). When on a continuous charge, the BESS functions as a “Power Amplifier” at construction sites, converting a small portion of a temporary power supply to a high output current for equipment with high instantaneous current requirements (e.g. tower cranes). By providing BESS consultations and support on construction sites, CLP is actively pursuing energy conservation and carbon reduction across the industry.

The BESS brings numerous benefits to the industry, benefiting both developers and contractors. On one hand, developers can enhance their brand by meeting sustainability goals and achieving higher green building standards. On the building side, contractors can reduce operating costs and provide a cleaner and safer working environment for construction workers, making Construction Noise Permits easier to obtain.

THE APERTURE, Hang Lung Properties’ new residential project in Kowloon Bay, is currently at the superstructure stage and is expected to be completed in 2023. The development will offer nearly 300 residential units. In May 2021, CLP advised Hang Lung Properties on the operational considerations and benefits of replacing diesel generators with the BESS to power the site’s tower cranes. This significantly cut down on noise pollution and fume emissions, minimising the impact of the site on the neighbourhood.

Hang Lung Properties believes that the environmentally friendly and effective BESS echoes its sustainability vision, cutting carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to diesel generators. Its low noise level and zero fume emissions have significantly reduced the site’s environmental impact on the neighbourhood. Hang Lung aims to introduce the BESS on all of its upcoming construction projects whenever feasible.

To encourage a wider adoption of the BESS across the construction industry, CLP has developed a guideline on using the BESS to cut carbon emissions on construction sites, which we will share across the construction sector through a series of seminars and workshops. Our vision is to bring Hong Kong ever closer to its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 through the cooperation of various sectors.
